A (Good Enough) Spring Cleaning Checklist

I'll be honest.  I don't usually do spring cleaning.

This year is different.

I gave birth to my daughter at the end of November, and, as is often the case, keeping house has taken a back seat to other things like babies, food, and sleep.

I am blessed to have a husband who does more than his fair share of the housework and cooking.  Even with our powers combined (much like Captain Planet), though, the status of our apartment has slowly slid towards entropy.  I'm hoping to reverse this trend in April.

I know a lot of people use spring cleaning to do their once-a-year deep cleaning duties.  We get around to those once-a-year tasks about as often as the country gets around to holding presidential elections, so I'm certainly not going to worry about those now of all times.  I'm just shooting for "good enough" with a few "needs to be done" tasks spread out over the four weekends in April.

Here is my current checklist.

Living Room
  • Vacuum sofa (including under the cushions)
  • Retrieve items from under and behind sofa
  • Clean windows and windowsill
  • Empty coat rack, sort, and reorganize
  • Sweep/mop entry way
  • Figure out a better system for shoes at the front door
  • General cleaning (vacuum, dust, rug)

Office area (in dining room)
  • Empty desk, sort, and reorganize
  • File papers
  • Sort through chest freezer (yes, it's in our "office")
  • Sort through pantry closet (yes, it's also in our "office")
  • General cleaning (dust, vacuum)

Kitchen
  • Clean out refrigerator
  • Clear off counters, sort, and reorganize
  • Empty out basket on top of refrigerator, sort, and reorganize
  • Sweep/mop
  • Clean out toaster oven
  • Sort through food cabinets
  • Reorganize tupperware
  • Wash rug

Master bathroom
  • Wash rugs
  • Sweep/mop floor
  • Wash and dry all the towels with baking soda and vinegar treatments
  • General cleaning (toilet, tub, sink, counter, mirror)

Bedroom
  • Put accumulated clothes and clutter away
  • Thoroughly dust bookshelf
  • Empty dresser drawers, sort, and reorganize
  • General cleaning (vacuum, dust, sheets)

 Kids' Room
  • Empty closet, sort, and reoganize
  • Go through clothes storage and rotate clothes to current sizes
  • Go through toy box and donate some toys
  • Wipe down top of changing table
  • Retrieve any items from under the bed or crib
  • Wash rugs
  • General cleaning (sheets, vacuum, dust)

Bathroom
  • Empty cabinets & drawers, sort, and reorganize
  • Retrieve any items from behind the washer & dryer
  • Sweep/mop floor
  • General cleaning (toilet, tub, rugs, sink, counter, mirror)

 I'm not worrying about
  • Cleaning stove/oven
  • Drapes and blinds
  • Baseboards, etc
  • Minor carpet stains
  • Light fixtures/ceiling fans
  • Bleach, period
  • Shower curtains
  • Bedroom closet
  • Hall closet
  • Master bathroom cabinets

And there it is!  As I get them done, I'll cross them off (as few things are more satisfying as making lists and then checking them off, am I right?).

Are you spring cleaning this year?  Anything you've decided not to bother with?
